To make things a little easier, we’ve grouped our favourite venues into categories including coastal, country, garden and estate weddings. Having filmed weddings throughout the Illawarra and South Coast for many years, we’ve also included practical insights and tips we’ve learnt along the way to help you choose the venue that’s right for you.

The Lodge Jamberoo
The Lodge Jamberoo offers a completely different wedding experience to anywhere else in the region. Set on nine acres of riverfront land and surrounded by towering pine trees and rainforest, it’s designed as a true destination wedding where everyone stays together for the weekend.
We’ve arrived on Friday evenings to wood-fired pizza, cocktails by the pool and guests already settling into the weekend together. By the time the wedding day arrives, everyone knows each other, the atmosphere is relaxed and it genuinely feels like a little European summer getaway.
The ceremony space sits beneath a grove of towering pine trees, creating a beautiful setting that works just as well in summer as it does in winter. Combined with the accommodation, restaurant, pool and relaxed recovery events, it’s one of the few venues where the entire wedding feels like a weekend away rather than just a single day.

Ravensthorpe Estate
Ravensthorpe is one of the Illawarra’s most established wedding venues, offering a beautiful balance of heritage charm, manicured gardens and modern event spaces. With exclusive use of the estate, couples can spend the entire day in one location, from morning preparations through to the reception and recovery brunch the following morning.
One of the things we love most about filming here is how everything flows naturally. The bridal salon is spacious with plenty of natural light, the gardens provide endless options for portraits throughout the day, and the purpose-built marquee offers a bright, elegant space for the reception.
One of our favourite things about Ravensthorpe is its elevated position. Perched on its own little hill, the venue catches long, golden sunsets throughout summer, creating beautiful light for portraits without needing to leave the property. It’s a venue that feels private, relaxed and beautifully looked after, making it an easy choice for couples wanting a timeless wedding in the Illawarra.

Kalinya Estate
Having filmed weddings at Kalinya Estate many times over the years, it’s a venue we always look forward to returning to. Combining heritage charm with beautifully designed modern event spaces across five private acres, it offers luxury accommodation, exclusive use of the estate and a relaxed multi-day wedding experience.
One of the things we love most about filming at Kalinya is how effortlessly the day flows. Morning preparations, the ceremony, portraits and reception can all take place on the property, meaning you spend more time celebrating with your guests and less time travelling between locations.
The Carriage House is a beautiful reception space with soaring ceilings, plenty of natural light and outdoor terraces overlooking the gardens. Throughout the estate you’ll find endless locations for portraits, from the formal gardens and heritage buildings to the quiet tree-lined pathways that become especially beautiful as the afternoon light begins to soften.

Gibraltar Bowral
While not technically in Wollongong, Gibraltar Bowral is less than an hour away and well worth considering if you’re open to the Southern Highlands. Surrounded by rolling fairways and landscaped gardens, it offers a relaxed country setting while still being close enough for many Illawarra couples.
We’ve filmed weddings here over the years and one of the things we really enjoy is how versatile the venue is. The spacious accommodation, elegant reception spaces and beautifully maintained grounds mean your entire wedding day can unfold in one location without feeling rushed.
As the afternoon light settles across the golf course and surrounding Highlands countryside, there are plenty of beautiful locations for portraits before heading back inside for the reception. If you’re looking for a venue that combines classic country charm with the convenience of a luxury hotel, Gibraltar is well worth adding to your shortlist.

Crooked River Wines
Located in Gerringong, around 30 minutes south of Wollongong, Crooked River Wines is one of the South Coast’s most picturesque wedding venues. Surrounded by rolling vineyards, green hills and sweeping coastal views, it offers a relaxed setting that feels distinctly South Coast while remaining an easy drive from Sydney.
We’ve had the pleasure of filming weddings here over the years, and it’s a venue we always enjoy returning to. One of the things we love most is how naturally the day flows, with beautiful ceremony locations, vineyard portraits and the reception all within easy walking distance.
As the afternoon light settles across the vines, the property really comes to life. Combined with the award-winning restaurant, experienced events team and nearby accommodation options, it’s an easy venue to recommend for couples wanting a destination-style wedding without travelling too far from home.

Greyleigh Kiama
Greyleigh Kiama is a wedding venue I genuinely love coming back to. It isn’t just because the views are incredible or the property looks beautiful, it’s because the whole place somehow feels both modern and authentic at the same time.
One thing I really appreciate is the reception space. I love venues that give everyone room to breathe. It might sound like a small thing, but for photographers and videographers it makes a huge difference. Being able to move freely between tables, capture reactions from every angle and work around a full dance floor without squeezing through tight spaces means I can tell the story of the day so much better.
Another thing I love is that Greyleigh offers a few different ceremony locations. Very few venues give couples that kind of flexibility, and I think it’s great that you can choose the setting that best suits your wedding rather than making your day fit the venue.
Rather than trying to describe Greyleigh any further, I think it makes more sense to show you. The film below is James and Steph’s wedding, and I think it captures exactly what the venue feels like on a real wedding day. It was a high-energy celebration from start to finish. James and Steph absolutely owned the dance floor, and it’s the perfect example of why having a spacious reception area really matters once the party gets going.

Coastal Weddings - ocean views, beaches and coastal scenery.
The Pavilion Kiama
The Pavilion Kiama is one of the South Coast’s most recognisable wedding venues, sitting right on the ocean in the heart of Kiama. As you can see from James & Kiara’s film above, they shared their first look beneath the Norfolk Pines before heading across to The Pavilion for their ceremony.
As far as wedding venues go, The Pavilion is definitely on the larger side. I’d mainly recommend it for bigger weddings, as the reception space can feel a little empty for smaller celebrations unless you’re planning to bring in plenty of styling and décor.
If a beach wedding is your thing, it’s hard to beat. There are loads of great photo and video locations nearby, and you can even see Surf Beach in the background of James & Kiara’s first look. Rather than me trying to explain it, I think their film gives you a much better feel for what a wedding day at The Pavilion is actually like.
Bonus option: We recommend the old Bombo quarry which is close by and perfect for some photography and videography time.

Novotel Wollongong Northbeach
The Novotel Northbeach is an elegant wedding venue known for its stunning ocean views and exceptional service. It offers a unique combination of a worldwide hotel chain’s quality and excellence with an intimate, personalized touch. With various dining and beverage packages, this award-winning beachside venue caters to every couple’s needs. It features spacious indoor and outdoor event spaces, accommodating weddings ranging from intimate gatherings of 40 to grand receptions with up to 350 guests. The venue’s Deck provides a warm sun-soaked setting for wedding ceremonies. With on-site accommodation, restaurants, and bars, Novotel Wollongong Northbeach is the perfect destination for a memorable multiday celebration.

Headlands Hotel Austinmer Beach
Headlands Austinmer Beach is a stunning waterfront wedding venue an hour from Sydney, boasting chic decor, panoramic ocean views, and nearby ceremony options. Couples love its modern feel, luxurious accommodation, and five-star service. The venue offers sun-drenched balconies and sandy beaches, catering to both intimate and grand weddings. It’s the perfect place for a beachside ceremony and memorable celebrations along the beautiful Illawarra coastline. Absolutely one our top picks for Wollongong wedding venues.
Hot Tip: Both Glastonbury Gardens and Little Austinmer beach are very close by and can be used as wedding ceremony location with easy access. Either can also be used as gorgeous photo and video shot location.

The Imperial at Clifton
Located just 500 metres from the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge, The Imperial at Clifton offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the escarpment. It’s a beautifully restored venue that’s best suited to small and medium-sized weddings. One thing to keep in mind is that it doesn’t offer an outdoor ceremony space, but there are some great nearby options, including Little Austinmer Beach and Glastonbury Gardens, which I’ll cover later in this guide.
Hugh & Maddie’s wedding film below took place on a cold, grey and rainy Saturday. Maddie had always hoped for sunset portraits, so instead we recreated that warm sunset feel using artificial lighting. Honestly, you’d never know. Before the wedding, we also spent an afternoon capturing some footage at Little Austinmer Beach, a place that means a lot to them as a couple. Ruby’s Mount Kembla
Ruby’s Mount Kembla, nestled in the historic village of Kembla Heights, has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s when it served as the village store and Post Office for coal miners and their families. Named after Ruby Moore, a renowned local resident and Post Mistress in the 1920s and 1930s, this meticulously restored establishment is now a beloved restaurant and wedding venue. Ruby’s is an ideal venue for couples who appreciate bold flavours, fun celebrations, and intimate gatherings.
City Beach Function Centre
Being right on the beach, literally, it offers views over Wollongong Harbour, the lighthouse and South Beach, while still being only a few minutes from the city.
One of the biggest advantages of City Beach is that it offers two separate reception spaces, making it well suited to both smaller and larger weddings. Both rooms have full floor-to-ceiling windows, which fill the space with natural light throughout the day.
If you’re planning to have your ceremony elsewhere, which I would recommend, it’s also close to some of Wollongong’s most popular portrait locations. That means you don’t spend half the afternoon driving between locations and can get back to celebrating with your guests sooner.

Seacliff House
eacliff House feels less like a traditional wedding venue and more like spending the weekend at an incredible private property with everyone you care about. Once you’re there, there’s really no reason to leave. The ceremony, canapés, portraits and reception all flow naturally through the property, which gives the whole day a relaxed pace.
One thing I really like is the amount of space. Even with 100+ guests it never feels crowded. People naturally spread out across the lawns, around the pool and through the entertaining areas, which creates a really nice atmosphere throughout the afternoon.
Because everything happens on the property, you also avoid losing an hour driving between locations for portraits. It means more time with your guests and a day that feels far less rushed.

Tumbling Waters
Tumbling Waters has always stood out to me for one simple reason, it’s one of the few venues that’s genuinely dog friendly. More and more couples are choosing to include their dogs in their wedding day, and I love seeing it. They’re family after all, so having them there for the ceremony, portraits or even just getting ready together makes the day feel that little bit more personal.
The property itself is beautiful, with private gardens, ocean views and plenty of space to explore. One of my favourite spots is the infinity pool, which always makes for a pretty spectacular backdrop. Everything is in one location too, so the day flows really naturally without needing to travel between venues.
Michael and Tegan’s wedding above is a perfect example. Not only did they include their two dogs throughout the day, but they also shared a beautiful first look with Tegan’s dad before the ceremony. It’s one of those weddings that reminds you the best moments are often the most personal ones.

Panorama House
I’ve filmed quite a few weddings here over the years and, while the views are fantastic, it’s not a venue I’d personally recommend unless the view is your main priority. The biggest issue for me is that there are often three or four weddings happening at the same time. It can feel crowded, the shared spaces get busy, and it’s not uncommon to hear another wedding’s speeches or music during your own reception.
The ceremony area can also feel rushed. Weddings are scheduled back-to-back, so it’s fairly common to arrive while the previous ceremony is still finishing. When ceremonies run late, the whole experience can feel a little chaotic, especially for your guests waiting for the ceremony to begin.
The venue itself is also starting to show its age. If you’re after a more modern aesthetic, there are other South Coast venues I’d recommend first. Finally, there aren’t many nearby options for photos and video, so you’ll often end up driving down the mountain and back again. That can easily use up time you’d probably rather spend with your guests.

Alternative Wedding Venues
Glastonbury Gardens
Glastonbury Gardens is one of Wollongong’s hidden gems. Run by Wollongong City Council, it’s a huge public garden that offers far more privacy than most people expect.
What I really like about it is that it gives you the feeling of a beachfront ceremony without actually standing on the sand. You still have the ocean as your backdrop, but you’re sheltered by established gardens, which makes it a much more comfortable option if it’s windy.
Guest parking is just behind the gardens, with only a short walk to the ceremony location. One small detail I really like is that couples can arrive without being seen by their guests, making that walk down the aisle feel like a genuine first reveal.
If you’re dreaming of an outdoor ceremony but don’t necessarily want the challenges of a beach wedding, Glastonbury Gardens is definitely worth considering.

Illawarra Rhododendron and Rainforest Gardens
Another hidden gem for couples wanting a private outdoor ceremony, the Wollongong Botanic Garden Rhododendron Garden feels a world away from the city despite being only minutes from the centre of Wollongong.
Surrounded by mature trees, ponds and seasonal flowering plants, it’s a beautiful setting for an intimate ceremony. During spring, when the rhododendrons are in bloom, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the region’s most popular ceremony locations. It’s also one of my favourite portrait locations, with plenty of variety all within a short walk. You can create a beautiful gallery without needing to leave the gardens.
There are a couple of practical things worth knowing before booking. Parking can be limited on busy weekends, and guests will need to make a short walk uphill from the car park to reach the ceremony location. Because the gardens are tucked into the escarpment, they also lose the afternoon sun earlier than many other ceremony locations, particularly during winter, so it’s worth keeping this in mind when planning your ceremony time.
If you’ve got your heart set on getting married here, I’d also recommend booking as early as possible. Spring and autumn weekends are especially popular and dates can fill quickly.
The Sebel Kiama

Wollongong Botanic Garden - Cactus and Succulent Garden
If you’re planning a ceremony at the Wollongong Botanic Garden, I’d highly recommend taking a look at the Cactus and Succulent Garden. It has a completely different feel to most ceremony locations, with sculptural cacti, warm green tones and a landscape that almost feels more like Palm Springs or Southern California than the South Coast.
It’s a beautiful option if you’re looking for something a little different. The garden photographs incredibly well, and because the cacti stay green year-round, it offers a consistent backdrop regardless of the season.
There are a couple of practical things to keep in mind. It’s one of the longer walks from the main car park, so it’s worth considering if you have elderly guests or anyone with limited mobility. During summer it can also get very hot, as there isn’t a great deal of shade throughout the garden. A later afternoon ceremony is usually a much more comfortable option.
If you’re after a ceremony location that feels unique without leaving Wollongong, this is easily one of my favourites. As you’ll see in the film below, it creates a backdrop that feels completely different to anywhere else in the region.

Final Thoughts
Getting Married in Wollongong
Wollongong is one of the most diverse wedding regions in New South Wales. Within half an hour you can choose between beachfront venues, private estates, vineyards, rainforest retreats, mountain views and modern reception spaces. Whether you’re planning an intimate celebration or a wedding with 150 guests, there’s genuinely something here to suit almost every style and budget.
One of the things I enjoy most about filming weddings in Wollongong is that no two venues feel the same. Some couples want an all-inclusive venue where everything happens in one place. Others prefer hiring a private property and creating something completely their own. Both approaches work brilliantly, it really just comes down to the kind of experience you want for yourselves and your guests.
If I had to narrow it down, a few venues that consistently stand out would be Tumbling Waters Retreat, The Lodge Jamberoo, Kalinya Estate, Greyleigh and Headlands Austinmer. Each offers something completely different, which is exactly what makes choosing a venue in this region so difficult.
Travel & Accommodation
One of Wollongong’s biggest advantages is how accessible it is. It’s close enough for Sydney guests to make the trip in under two hours, while still feeling like a destination wedding. For couples travelling from interstate, Sydney Airport is usually the easiest option before making the drive south.
Accommodation ranges from beachfront hotels and apartments through to private Airbnbs and rural stays, making it easy for guests to find something that suits both their budget and the style of the weekend.
When Is the Best Time to Get Married?
There really isn’t a bad time to get married in Wollongong.
Autumn and spring are generally the most popular, with comfortable temperatures and beautiful afternoon light. Summer offers longer days but can bring humidity and afternoon storms, while winter often delivers crisp, clear skies and softer light that can look incredible on camera.
No matter which season you choose, I’d always recommend selecting a venue with a solid wet weather option. Even if the forecast looks perfect, having a backup plan means everyone can relax and simply enjoy the day.
