Many couples first discover analogue wedding films while searching for Super 8. It’s the format most people recognise, celebrated for its nostalgic charm and unmistakable character. For a number of years it was part of the way we created wedding films, and it played an important role in shaping our appreciation for analogue filmmaking.
Today, however, we shoot exclusively on Ultra 16 Kodak motion picture film. Our love for analogue never changed. Only the format did.
There’s something about genuine motion picture film that digital has never quite replaced. The way it records light through chemistry rather than a sensor gives every frame a natural texture and character that’s difficult to describe but instantly recognisable. Analogue encourages a different way of filmmaking. Every frame is considered. Every shot has purpose. It slows the creative process in the best possible way, encouraging observation over repetition.
As our filmmaking evolved, so did the standard we wanted to deliver. After working with Super 8, we found ourselves wanting a format that sat more naturally alongside our digital wedding cinematography while preserving everything we loved about shooting real film.
That naturally led us to Ultra 16.
Originally developed from professional 16mm motion picture film, Ultra 16 retains everything we love about analogue while offering richer colour, a more refined grain structure and an image that blends beautifully with modern digital cinematography. If you’re expecting the heavy grain and obvious imperfections often associated with Super 8, Ultra 16 may surprise you. Rather than standing apart from our digital footage, it integrates seamlessly with it, preserving the unmistakable character of genuine motion picture film in a far more refined way. We simply believe Ultra 16 better reflects the films we create today.
The larger film negative of Ultra 16mm plays a significant role in the way the image is rendered. It captures finer detail, smoother tonal transitions and richer colour, producing a frame that feels more refined while preserving the unmistakable character of genuine analogue film. As our couples increasingly enjoy their films on large 4K televisions and high-resolution displays, this additional information allows Ultra 16mm to retain its texture and depth beautifully. Perhaps most importantly, it sits naturally alongside our digital cinematography, allowing both mediums to complement one another.
